What Can We Do To Reduce Drunk Driving?

Two Police Officers Injured

A car accident on February 16 injured two police officers in East Garfield Park. Reportedly, a red sedan ran a red light and hit the front of the squad car. The unnamed sedan driver was arrested as he tried to run away, and police believe the driver had been drinking. Fortunately, the officers have non-life threatening injuries, but they were hospitalized. Even a non-life threatening injury can leave a victim with ongoing pain and years of recovery, and we hope the officers recover quickly. Still, the question remains: what can be done to protect the public from drunk driving?

Awareness campaigns, designated driver initiatives and stronger penalties for drunken offenders are all a part of the now decades-long push to eliminate drunk driving. When accident victims receive large awards for damages from drivers, publicizing the award can further reduce the impulse to drive while impaired. Another lesser known method to combat the number of drunk drivers is the Illinois Dram Shop Act. Under the Dram Shop Act, restaurants, bars and other commercial alcohol providers can be financially liable if they sold the alcohol that intoxicated the person responsible for an accident. In other words, victims can receive compensation not only from the drunk driver, but also from the business that got the driver drunk.

By holding businesses responsible for the drunken patrons they release onto our streets, Illinois has an additional party in the fight against drunk driving. We implore anyone who knows someone attempting to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs to do their part to keep them from driving and to call the authorities if you see a drunk driver.
